The Bushmen have always been afraid of rainbows. Whenever they see a rainbow they shout and hit the ground with sticks to drive away the rainbow. According an ancient Bushmen legend, Rain was a pretty young woman married to Earth. She wore a colourful belt around her waist-the rainbow. Rain and Earth had two daughters and a son, Son-eib. One day the children wanted to go down to Earth. A wolf promised to look after them. When the three sky children landed in a village they were tired and hungry. They went to an old woman's house. But the wolf asked Son-eib to wait outside. The woman welcomed them and fed them. The hungry boy waited by a bush. He caught a bird and hid it in his coat. The wolf asked the hungry son to sleep in a small hut outside. As soon as he slept, the wolf collected all the bad people in the village, told them wicked lies about Son-eib and set the small hut on fire. The small bird escaped the fire and flew to the sky. She told everyone that the wolf had done. Soon the people saw a terrible storm. It rained endlessly till all the wicked people drowned. The Bushmen have feared rain since then. They have always tried to drive away the rain.
